Hearing Loss in Children: When to Consider Advanced Hearing Technology Solutions

Hearing plays a critical role in a child’s development, affecting everything from speech and language skills to learning and social connection. In many cases, early hearing issues can be managed with simple treatments. But when hearing loss is more significant or persistent, it may be time to explore advanced hearing technology.

For families in Wichita Falls, understanding when to explore hearing aids or other advanced solutions can help children stay on track and thrive, at home, in school, and beyond.

Recognizing Hearing Loss in Children

Hearing loss isn’t always easy to spot, especially in younger kids. Here are some signs to watch for at different ages:

Infants & Toddlers

  • Not startled by loud sounds
  • Delayed speech development
  • Not responding to their name or familiar voices

School-Aged Children

  • Difficulty following directions
  • Frequent “what?” or “huh?” responses
  • Trouble keeping up in class
  • Speaking loudly or watching others to follow conversation cues

If you’re noticing any of these signs, a hearing evaluation by one of our audiologists is an important next step.

When Is Advanced Hearing Technology Recommended?

While some types of hearing loss, like those caused by ear infections or fluid buildup, can be treated medically, others are more permanent and affect the inner ear or hearing nerve. In these cases, advanced hearing technology may be the best option to support your child’s hearing and development. These options include:

  • Hearing Aids
Modern hearing aids for children are designed to support speech clarity, learning, and safe awareness of surroundings. They’re comfortable, durable, and come in fun colors to help normalize use. Children are most often fitted with Behind-The-Ear (BTE) hearing aids. These devices have a casing that sits behind the ear and connects to a speaker in the ear canal via a small tube or wire. BTE hearing aids are powerful, reliable, and effective at delivering clear, consistent sound which makes them ideal for supporting speech and language development in children.
  • Cochlear Implants
Cochlear implants are devices for children with severe to profound hearing loss who don’t benefit from hearing aids. Instead of amplifying sound, they send signals directly to the hearing nerve, helping the brain interpret sound more clearly. The system includes a small device worn behind the ear and internal parts placed under the skin. Cochlear implants can help improve sound awareness and speech understanding.

Why Early Intervention Matters

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) EHDI, “has endorsed national guidelines that recommend a child should receive a hearing screening no later than one month of age, a diagnosis by three months, and entry into early intervention services by six months of age.” Early detection and intervention are key to improving language development and helping children stay on track with their peers.

At Texoma ENT & Allergy, we work closely with families to build comprehensive care plans for kids with hearing loss. The earlier we act, the more support we can provide.
